Robust meeting between Ioane Naivalurua and Shamima Ali
19 May, 2025

The Minister for Police, Ioane Naivalurua paid a courtesy call to the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre today and had robust and fruitful discussions with Coordinator Shamima Ali.
Today’s meeting is the result of a series of discussions between Naivalurua and Shamima following comments about violence against women and girls made by the Minister to the media.
They discussed challenges with the Police, Fiji’s National Action Plan to prevent violence against women and girls, the important role of the religious and traditional settings in prevention, and the involvement of FWCC in gender-sensitizing officers at the recruitment and cadet level.
Shamima and Naivalurua have reaffirmed the need to enhance collaboration through training and the sharing of information to standardize responses to cases of violence against women.
This discussion with the Minister is an extension of the meeting with the Police Commissioner Rusiate Tudravu in March this year.
FWCC will continue to explore every avenue through which women, girls and children get the justice they deserve.
We thank the Minister and Police Commissioner for keeping an open door to allow these discussions and to continue sharing our common concerns regarding women and children.
