NGO Coalition on Human Rights raises grave concerns over planned opening of Israeli Embassy in Fiji
22 Jan, 2026
The NGO Coalition on Human Rights in Fiji (NGOCHR) expresses deep concern over recent media reports that Israel is expected to open an embassy in Fiji in April 2026, following Fiji’s recent diplomatic alignment with Israel.
NGOCHR believes this move undermines international law and Fiji’s long-standing commitment to human rights and multilateralism. The status of Jerusalem remains unresolved under international law, with numerous United Nations resolutions and advisory opinions of the International Court of Justice cautioning states against actions that imply recognition of unlawful occupation.
At a time when credible UN bodies and human rights organisations continue to document serious violations of international humanitarian and human rights law in the Occupied Palestinian Territories, Fiji’s decision to host an Israeli embassy risks being perceived as tacit endorsement and complicity in those violations.
Fiji has historically upheld principles of peace, decolonisation, and respect for international law. This diplomatic shift threatens to erode that moral standing and contradicts our obligations to avoid actions that legitimise or normalise unlawful conduct by any state.
NGOCHR calls on the Fijian Government to reconsider this decision, recommit to a principled, rights-based foreign policy, and align its international relations with the values of justice, accountability, and respect for international law.
