FWCC RESPONSE TO THE FIJI TIMES AND FIJIAN DRUA
14 May, 2025
The Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre would like to respond to a story by the Fiji Times today with the headline “Culture of Silence” and a press release by the Fijian Drua titled “Fijian Drua Clarification Statement.”
Fijivillage and FBC News have widely published the statement by the Fijian Drua while the Fiji Times is awaiting a response from FWCC.
FWCC recognizes that the context of its comments might have been misrepresented.
FWCC has responded and is responding to cases of domestic violence, rape, sexism, and misogyny in rugby and within various sporting organizations in Fiji including alleged collusion by Police.
Our public statements are evidence-based and informed by the lived experiences of women and girls who seek our support.
FWCC renews its calls for gender sensitization of all rugby players in Fiji Rugby and Fijian Drua programs.
There is an urgent need for gender sensitization that includes educating players, coaches, and administrators about gender equality, challenging stereotypes, and preventing violence against women and girls.
Let’s end impunity for all perpetrators of violence.
