16 DAYS OF ACTIVISM

The theme of this year’s 16 Days of Activism against Gender Violence Campaign is “Commit-Act-Demand: We CAN end Violence against Women"!

As part of the 16 Days of Activism, held from November 25 to December 10, the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and branches are focusing on mobilizing communities and getting communities to commit to eliminating violence against women and act in appropriate ways.

Workshops and awareness sessions on violence against women have been planned for rural communities and groups in Nadi, Seaqaqa, Tavua, Ba, Sigatoka and Labasa. Community awareness sessions will be held for the Meiguniyah Women’s Club, Lavusa Indian Women’s Club, Navo settlement, Sigatoka and Bemana village. Workshops will be conducted for communities in Seaqaqa and Kubulau and also in Keiyasi and Vatutavoi village. The workshops will focus on domestic violence and sexual assault and how communities can work to provide support for victims and prevent these acts of violence.

An open day for the Labasa, Ba and Nadi Centre will be held on Thursday 10th December, at their respective offices, for the public to obtain information about violence against women.

A national meeting on eliminating violence against women in Fiji has been organized by the Fiji Women’s Crisis Centre and will be held in Suva on the 9th and 10th December at Studio 6. The purpose of the meeting is to improve the understanding of the dynamics of violence against women based on women’s experiences in Fiji, to get a better understanding of the role of the various service providers in Fiji and to develop strategies for the improved services and responses to victim/survivors of violence against women. The meeting will include an overview of the situation of violence against women in Fiji and presentations from various service providers. There will be opportunities for discussions around these areas and for possible prevention strategies.

Why should I upgrade to Internet Explorer 7? Microsoft has redesigned Internet Explorer from the ground up, with better security, new capabilities, and a whole new interface. Many changes resulted from the feedback of millions of users who tested prerelease versions of the new browser. The most compelling reason to upgrade is the improved security. The Internet of today is not the Internet of five years ago. There are dangers that simply didn't exist back in 2001, when Internet Explorer 6 was released to the world. Internet Explorer 7 makes surfing the web fundamentally safer by offering greater protection against viruses, spyware, and other online risks.
